Moratorium on fast food resto in Boracay?

BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

A moratorium in the establishment fast food chains in Boracay Island is being sought by the Sangguniang Bayan of Malay.

SB member Maylynn Aguirre-Graf called for a two-year moratorium on new fast food restaurants from expanding or opening in the island.

Fast food joints are establishments with limited menu, food served in disposable containers or wrapping and prepared in advance or heated quickly for consumption on or off the outlets.

In mid-2000s, these establishments started to sprout like mushrooms in the beach front and main road of Boracay Island which took a hit from the Sangguniang Bayan members on  how to manage the huge volume of garbage generated by establishments and by tourists.

“We have to put a stop for the meantime while we are solving the concerns on garbage disposal,” said Aguirre, chairperson of the committee on environment.

The moratorium comes at a time the local government of Malay is facing mounting food waste and trash problem in Boracay Island.

At present, a residual waste contractor is hauling more than 10,000 cubic meters in Barangay Balabag material recovery facility (MRF) to Barangay Kabulihan in Malay mainland for a budget of P8.9-million.
