BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

Kalibo mayor William Lachica said he remains optimistic that the town of Kalibo will achieve significant growth following the latest results released by the National Competitiveness Council (NCC).

Kalibo, a first-class municipality, slid down to 5th spot among the 1st to 2nd class municipalities category out of 978 municipalities in the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI). In 2014, Kalibo ranked 3rd for the overall most competitive municipalities.

Under the leadership of Lachica, Kalibo placed fifth in government efficiency, 11th in economic dynamism and 20th in infrastructure this year.

Lachica said business confidence for the coming years is high for the town of Kalibo, especially on the roll-out of more infrastructure programs and fast-growing construction activities.

Breaking down the indicators, Kalibo scored 1st in availability of facilities, 6th in health, 9th in education, 14th in the number of ATMs and 41st in the number of public transportation vehicles for the pillar on infrastructure.

For the government efficiency, the town placed 2nd in capacity of health services, 3rd in LGU competition related awards while in economic dynamism, Kalibo ranked 6th in financial institutions and 24th in the capacity to generate employment.

The Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index is a program which encourages LGUs to gather and voluntarily submit data which are used to measure their performance on three pillars anchored on global standards: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, and Infrastructure. Each pillar has indicators which provide a more detailed view of the economic status of the locality.

There are 8 indicators for Economic Dynamism and 10 indicators for both Government Efficiency and Infrastructure, totaling 28 indicators.

The data submitted by the Local Government Units, through the assistance of a partner Academe and the Regional Competitiveness Committees, is used for the final scoring and ranking.
