BJMP-Aklan ‘greyhound’ operations seized contrabands

Contrabands of inmates were confiscated in the surprise inspections at the Bureau of Jail and Management Penology (BJMP)-Aklan, Bombo-Radyo Kalibo reported.

BJMP-Aklan in Barangay Nalook in Kalibo, Aklan houses 256 inmates, 28 of which are female detainees.

Senior Jail Inspector Jairus Anthony Dogelio, BJMP-Aklan jail warden, said the ‘greyhound operations’ are conducted regularly to flush out and confiscate contrabands such as weapons, gadgets and illegal drugs. 

The random and unannounced inspections of inmates’ cells and other areas also aimed to maintain security at the detention facility. 

“Mga gadgets ang nakuha, mga portable DVD players, cellphones kag gadgets capable of connecting into the internet. Ang contrabands hindi na ginabalik sa mga family members of inmates. These are send to BJMP regional office for proper disposal,” he said.

Last week, BJMP regional office had its ‘operation: greyhound’ of BJMP-Aklan detention cells for possible entry of contrabands. 

Contrabands are any article, item, or thing prohibited by law and/or forbidden by jail rules that would pose as security hazards or endanger the lives of inmates which include dangerous drugs, weapons, potential weapons. 

Forbidden by jail rules also are cellphone, money or other commodities of exchange such as jewelry, appliances and gadgets, wearing apparels and sleeping paraphernalia, intoxicating liquors, cigarettes, pornographic materials, sex toys and other products that are considered vices.

To uplift the morale and social development of inmates, BJMP-Aklan coordinates with the labor department to provide job opportunities for family members of inmates especially during job fairs. 

Dogelio said a dormitory for female inmates to address the decongestion in the BJMP facility is also being planned for construction through the support of the local government.
