Flooding 'threatens' Boracay tourism

Occasional monsoon rains (habagat) intensified by tropical storm ‘Florita’ caused flooding in low-lying areas in central Boracay and may have serious effects on tourism on the country’s premier destination. 

Boracay tourism officer Artemio Ticar said the “experience of tourists and residents wading in floodwaters have become more frequent.”

“Isa sa mga problema natin ang pagbaha hindi lamang sa mga kalsada kundi maging sa mga interior portions ng Boracay at sa mga palengke. Ito ay nakakahiya, parang embarrasing na nakikita ng ating mga bisita na ganito ang sitwasyon ng isla natin ngayon,” he said over Bombo Radyo Kalibo.

But he said tourists still came out in droves despite the inclement weather in the island to enjoy the beach. 

Some residential areas and roads in the barangays of Manoc-Manoc and Balabag  were also submerged through ankle-deep floodwaters, but passable to light vehicles.

“Dahil na rin sa tuloy-tuloy at araw-araw na pag-ulan sa isla hindi kaya ng ating drainage system ang tubig ulan. Ang mga dating waterways kasi natin ay sarado na dahil sa napagtayuan ng mga structures,” Ticar added.

“Malaking problema natin sa turismo pag napupunta sa ating White Beach itong mga tubig baha.”

Ticar said mitigating measures and projects must be in place to better address the flooding in Boracay Island. 

“Marami ng mga plano para maagapan ang pagbaha katulad ng pag-put up ng pumping stations na nakatulong sa pagbawas ng tubig ulan sa mga naapektong lugar,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sangguniang Bayan member Rowen Aguirre lamented the long overdue delay of the completion of drainage projects of the national government, in a separate interview of Bombo Radyo.
