Echoes From
BY JOHNNY DAYANG
The Philippine peso is
predicted to remain weak until the end of this year.
Analysts from the First
Metro Investment Corp. (FMIC) and University of Asia and the Pacific (UAP)
economics professor of the Victor Abola see the peso ending the year somewhere
between 43 and 46 per US dollar.
The weakening of the peso by P2 to P3 in the next five months, while consumer prices keep climbing would mean more Filipinos tightening their belts, unless President Aquino’s administration can adopt urgent and effective measures to address the threatening problems caused by acute lack of commodity supplies.
Dwindling supply of key
commodities, over which the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has no control, will
surely subject more people to suffer difficulties. BSP, according to its Deputy
Governor Diwa Guinigundo, is now under pressure to adjust monetary settings to
control demand and keep it from exacerbating the situation caused by shortage
of supplies.
Filipinos, particularly
the less fortunate, are worried because of the rising costs of living while
salaries and wages are not getting any better.

De Lima, director-general, has reacquired a 45-hectare economic zone in Pampanga from the National Livelihood Development Center, formerly Live Corp. to boost its industrial space inventory for export-oriented enterprises.
