NGOs should reassume responsibilties

Echoes From
BY JOHNNY DAYANG

After the scandals created by the sensational investigations of Janet Lim-Napoles and her alleged fake “foundations” the non-government organizations (NGOs) should now actively reassume their responsibilities and reassert their inherent functions to serve their people and country, especially our disadvantages citizens.

The NGOs should even be in the frontlines in designing and directing programs of the country and address the nation’s problems and challenges.

In the light of our badly-damaged and corrupt political culture, the citizentry represented by various NGOs must reassume the direction of governmental affairs.

The more knowledgeable, respected, and civic-minded citizens who are not in public service should lend their collective talents, experience to chart the progress and development of the Philippines and spearhead movements for reforms and meaningful changes.

It can be truly said that the best and the brightest among our people are in the private sector, not in government. It is the disgusting abuse and misuse of political power and influence that has stymied economic growth and development and stalled the operations of government instrumentalities.

Again, it can be noted that the corruptive allure of high positions in government is what discourages sincere and honest leaders in business and professional circles to enter and seek positions in government.

In fact, the emergence of NGOs is a reaction, an oblique distaste for public service. It’s another way of expressing disappointment on the performance of government.

But for the NGOs to be effective, their members must be cause-oriented, values-driven, and collective in leadership. They must be individuals of proven tract records, highly respected in their professional disciplines and occupations, competent, honest and dedicated.

If the various NGOs converge and act together as an advocacy and mission-propelled movement, as planned in the “2014 Strategic Convergence of NGOs for Countryside Growth”, under the auspices of Ben Hur Z. Mobo Foundation, Inc. at the Aklan State University, on April 21, then they can really hasten the recasting and reinventing of Philippine Society to set up a truly democratic and egalitarian policy.

With the assistance of the “guros” of the NGOs and the support of numerous agencies and institutions, and with the re-known hospitality of Aklan people and beauty of Boracay, there is no doubt that historic convergence would be a dramatic success.
