Residents have been
assured the quality of water reaching their homes is definitely safe for
drinking, a top official of Metro Kalibo Water District (MKWD) said.
The water district dismissed
claims of ‘imminent danger to the quality of Kalibo water which could not
conform to national standards for potable drinking water’.
The controversy begun when
Kalibo mayor William Lachica asked the local legislative council on January 13 for a modification
of a memorandum of agreement for a joint venture between Cebu-based Mactan Rock
Industries and the local government of Kalibo for bulk water supply and
distribution for Kalibo concessionaires.
In reaction to the letter,
MKWD chairman of the board Atty. Edmund Peralta said “the reputation (of MKWD)
is damaged, that they are not providing their consumers quality water. “
“Unfortunately, the issue
is embarrassing for the MKWD. In so far as the volume (of water), we have steady
supply and enough potable water for the consumers,” he said.
“We are a large water
district, well performing and one of the country’s best managed districts. For
37 years, MKWD have been serving the areas to ensure that safe and reliable
water is available to all our more than 20,000 customers,” Peralta added in a
press conference on Friday.
Peralta said the regular laboratory
tests conducted by the Western Visayas Medical Center showed that the water
from MKWD are within the national standards, safe and fit water for drinking
and household use.
“We monitor and
test water quality to ensure that it is safe for drinking,” he stressed.
MKWD is providing water
sourced from deep wells to the towns of Kalibo, New Washington, Banga, Balete
and some barangays in Batan.
