Beware of fake tourist guides and commissioners in
Boracay Island.
This was the stern warning of Department of Tourism (DoT)-Boracay in the wake of reports of ‘salisi’ victimizing tourists staying in the island.
This was the stern warning of Department of Tourism (DoT)-Boracay in the wake of reports of ‘salisi’ victimizing tourists staying in the island.
This week, five Korean nationals were victims of ‘salisi’ in
Barangay Balabag when they leave their bags to an island commissioner while they
go for a sailing activity.
“Tourists are warned to avoid being victims of overcharging
and ‘salisi’. Be extra aware on unlicensed tour guides along the beach front
offering their water sports activities,” DoT-Boracay officer-in-charge Artemio ‘Tim’
Ticar said.
There are at least 20 licensed tourist guides, one of
them a Singaporean national, doing business in Boracay Island.
“Travelers, especially non-seasoned tourists, should ask the
tour guides or commissioners first if they are licensed before agreeing for a
tour in the island,” he said.
“Beware also of snatching in the beachfront. You should
avoid bringing any valuables to the beach as theft are occasionally reported to
the local police,” he added.
To assist tourists in their guided tours and sightseeing,
the DoT-Boracay office remains open daily including on holidays. DoT staff also
man the office round the clock and cooperates closely with other agencies to
help tourists.
Ticar said the DoT-office have been providing
assistance to visitors and travelers for years with anything to do with
their stay in the island.
