Aklan players off to ASEAN chess fest in Indonesia

KALIBO, Aklan - Two Aklanon chess players will be joining the Philippine team to the 12th ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships from June 12 to 21.

The chess event will be held in Tarakan, an island off the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The official venue of the nine-round Swiss-system tournament is the Indoor Telaga Kramat Stadium.

Provincial Sports Coordinator Wilfredo Neri said the Aklan young and talented woodpushers are Mira Mirano and Mary Sol Frances Quitong.

Mirano is seeing action in the girls 14 years old and under while Quitong will compete in the girls under 8 in the competition hosted by the Indonesia Chess Association (Perkasi) and sanctioned by the ASEAN Chess Confederation headed by Ignatius Leong.

Six age groups - U-8, 10, 12, 14 ,16 and 20 will be played in the standard (9 rounds), rapid (7 rounds) and blitz (team 11 rounds) chess games, in the boys and girls divisions. The top three players in each categories will be awarded medals.

Neri said the PH chess team will be leaving for Indonesia on June 11.
