WV athletes win two more golds, Aklan's bet took silver in long jump

Two golds disputed in athletics on Tuesday went to powerhouse Western Visayas in the 2011 Palarong Pambansa in Dapitan City from May 8 to 14.

Gerald Mark Layumas of Western Visayas became a double-gold medal winner in secondary boys’ athletics after dominating the triple jump in 14.34 meters in Day Three of the multi-event extravaganza.

Layumas, a gold medalist in this year’s long jump, edged Noverson Valverde of Southern Tagalog in 14.02 meters and Earl Romielle Salinas of Central Visayas in 13.87 meters.

Western Visayas’ other gold medal came from Ralph Efraem Gesulgon of Iloilo, who rule the javelin throw in 52.30 meters at the Jose Rizal Memorial University Sports Complex. Gesulgon, also a double-gold medalist, earlier broke the 13.19 meters Palaro record of Arthur Enon of Western Mindanao in 1990 by registering 13.98 meters in shot put event.


Joshua Barredo, also of Western Visayas, hurled 49.99 meters for the silver and Regie Ric Pangan of Central Luzon took the bronze in 49.61 meters.

In secondary girls’ long jump, Aklan’s bet Cyrene Joy Magbanua leapt to a distance of 5.27 meters to settle for the silver medal behind the personal best of Yra. Perlita Ynot of National Capital Region in 5.30 meters. Leemarie Carugda of Western Visayas also went home for the bronze in 5.17 meters.


In elementary boys’ athletics, Rolando Sisgados, Jr. of Cotabato Region stamped his mark when he topped the triple jump in 11.58 meters. Steve John Vergara of Central Visayas finished second with a jump of 11.45 meters while teammate Kit Vincent Pelletero got the bronze in 11.27 meters.

Local bet Terencezel Medina of Zamboanga Peninsula Region ruled the elementary girls’ shot put. Medina hurled the iron ball in 8.97 meters while Mary Jane Lawas of Cotabato Region claimed the silver medal in 8.96 meters and Edelyn Batiancila of Western Visayas for the bronze in 8.94 meters.

In secondary girls’ volleyball preliminaries, Western Visayas whipped Cordillera in two sets, 25-9, 25-13 in Group B while Calabarzon dominated Caraga, 25-12, 25-10 in Group C.

Zamboanga Peninsula outclassed Cagayan Valley, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17 in their Group B match. Central Luzon also outsteadied ARMM, 25-8, 25-15 in Group D.

National Capital Region defeated Cotabato Region in Group A, 25-8, 25-15 while Eastern Visayas won over Ilocos Region in Group A, 25-16, 28-26. Central Visayas outpointed Calabarzon in Group C, 25-23, 25-16.
