Aklan athletes shine in PH national games,
gold in boys’ 10,000-meter run

BACOLOD CITY – Gregg Vincent Osorio went home the athletics gold for the province of Aklan in the 2011 Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) National Games in Panaad Park in Bacolod City.

Vying in the boys’ 10,000-meter run, Osorio from Nabas, Aklan, dominated the event in 34 minutes and 47.68 seconds in the weeklong Olympic-style sports showcase National Open-Invitational Athletics Championships held from May 22 to 29.

Osorio, who graduated in Western Aklan Academy in 2009 and currently studying at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila, beat Arwin Sabunod of Calatrava Team (36:55.97) and Ryan Jalop of Aklan (38:05.53) in seizing the gold in the boys’ 10,000 meters run.

Osorio also picked up the bronze in the boys’ 5,000 meters run in 16:34.48. Ryan Hulleza of San Sebastian handily defeated Ruen Dela Torre (16:29.84) of Koronadal, South Cotabato, clocking 16:24.33 for the 5,000 meters run boys.

Sharing the spotlight with Osorio were Reynold Gonzales who came up with a 20.51 meters for the silver in the hammer throw event, while teammate Reygavil Cataylo made 19.38 meters for the bronze medal.

Cataylo also seized the bronze in boys’ shot put with a heave of 11.92 meters.

Meanwhile, John Mariel Vista leapt of 13.34 meters in boys’ triple jump was good enough for the silver.

Marjun Tabay captured the silver in boys’ javelin throw in 42.33 meters behind the gold medal effort of Ruehiyay Cabanyog of Bacolod City in 43.88 meters.

Cyrene Joy Magbanua also took the bronze in long jump girls in 5.15 meters. Merrey Gabali of Zone Sandakan AAA leapt 5.29 meters for the gold and Iris Baluran of Team Cebu City grabbed the bronze in 5.18 meters.

Jeremy Rubias also got the bronze medal in javelin throw girls in 29.54 meters. Connie Cajilo of Calatrava team had the gold in 36.63 meters while Janel Vinegas of Baguio City took the silver medal in 33.28 meters.

2011 Palarong Pambansa bemedalled athlete Jasmin Tayco clocked 27.82 seconds to settle for bronze in the 200 M dash girls.

Tayco of Numancia, Aklan took another bronze in high jump girls in 1.45 meters behind runaway winner Marla Felice Ellaga of Baguio City in 1.60 meters. Maureen Shcrivjers of TMS Ships Agency bagged the silver in 1.55 meters.

Nino Sherwin de Guia registered 2:03.57 in 800M run boys on the way for the bronze. Joan Caido of Baguio City topped the event in 2:01.71 while Baguio City teammate Jonfrey Opendo took the silver in 2:02.56.

Vincent Crispino and Stanly Morales – tied for 4th place in high jump boys (1.70 meters)
Marlo de Asis – 9th place in 1500M run boys (4:34.38)
Nino Sherwin de Guia – 8th place in 1500M run boys (4:30:34)
Jeremy Rubias – 11th place in discus throw girls (8.67 meters)
Marjun Tabay – 4th place in discus throw boys (32.77 meters)
