KALIBO, Aklan - Grandmaster Wesley So (ELO 2667) of Tagaytay City humbled Grandmaster John Paul Gomez (ELO 2538) of Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA)-A in the fifth round of their keenly-watched chess match at the Gov. Corazon L. Cabagnot Tourism and Training Center late Sunday afternoon.
Gomez was So's second victim belonging to the ELO 2500 club in this team competition organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and the provincial government of Aklan.
The 17-year old Filipino champion previously beaten GM Mark Paragua (ELO 2547) of Misamis Oriental, unrated Jimmy Jimenez of Accenture Chess Enthusiasts Club A, Rodrigo Atutubo (ELO 2312) of Iloilo Club 64, Inc. and Severino Sander (ELO 2344) of Bacolod-Negros Chess Team.
So, ranked No. 1 in the country by FIDE and No. 4 junior (Under-20) in the world, will face Fide Master Jony Habla (ELO 2333) of Dep Ed A in the sixth round on Monday morning.
Overall, Tagaytay City maintained its full point lead over LWUA-A with nine match points after five rounds of play.
Actually, LWUA-A settled to draw their matches, 2-2, with Ted Ian Montoyo (ELO 2297) and Jayson Salubre (ELO 2297) routed Tagaytay's Allan Cantonjos (ELO 2191) and Ivan Gil Biag, respectively.
In board four, Gary Garcia of Tagaytay City beat rated Mari Joseph Torqueza (ELO 2181).
Third-ranked Misamis Oriental also trounced South Cotabato, 3-1. Grandmaster Mark Paraqua bested South Cotabato's top board player Cezar Mariano while Jhonel Balquin and Richlieu Salcedo hurdled their Mindanao rivals - Ferdinand Leysa and Xavier John Verdun.

In other matches, LWUA-C outduelled Antique, 3-1 while Bulacan BYCF blanked Team B Aklan, 4-0. DAR Quezon City led by Emmanuel Senador came away with a victory over Palawan, 3-1 and Passi City outplayed Capiz, 2.5-1.5.
LWUA-B drew with Gov. Bombit Adiong Lanao del Sur and Dep Ed B also did it the same with ASU-CIT Aklan.
Team C Aklan beat Accenture Chess Enthusiasts Club A, 3-1 while Bacolod-Negros Chess Team defeated Makati, 3.5-0.5.
All boy's squad Team F Aklan also nipped all girl's Team F Aklan, 2.5-1.5. John Michael Oczon dealt Mira Mirano in top board her second straight setback in three games while Jonas Legaspi whipped Tiffany Liane Garingalao.
Alea Bianca Garingalao battled Jan Jeryl Templonuevo to a draw in board three and teammate Marysol Quitong upset John Christian Duno in board four.
La Paz (Iloilo) Chess Team also stopped Accenture Chess Enthusiasts Club B for a 3.5-0.5 victory.
