Chinese tourist drowns off Boracay beach

BORACAY – A Chinese tourist has drowned while swimming in the waters of Boracay Island.

The fatality identified as 28-year old Zhang Wei from Lane 1398 West Wuding Road, Shanghai, China, was seen at the snorkelling area at Sitio Tambisaan in Barangay Manoc-Manoc on Friday morning.

Police said the Chinese national, who was staying at the posh resort hotel in Barangay Yapak, was pulled ashore by bystanders and his friends. He was declared dead upon arrival at Don Ciriaco S. Tirol Hospital in Barangay Balabag.

In a report from Boracay Special Tourist Protection Office (BSTPO), the victim appeared having difficulty swimming, about 15 meters away from shore near a resort hotel in Sitio Tambisaan.

BSTPO received the report at around 1.40 pm from the local hospital that a Chinese tourist died while on vacation. The incident happened at around 11.30am Friday, the police added.
