Aklan SP asks DPWH to probe delayed Aklan River dredging project
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan - The provincial board is urging Secretary Rogelio Singson of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to conduct investigation of the delayed P100-million dredging works of the silted Aklan River.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Rodson Mayor decried the lack of consultation of the project, but it pushed through and awarded to International Builders Corporation and Towking Construction on June 2009.
"The legislative council was further dismayed that the contract is extended and a sizeable portion of the extended contract price of the project, more than P8 million goes to the rental of heavy equipments when the contractor himself must be fully equipped before the bidding," Mayor stressed in his approved resolution yesterday.
Last year, DPWH officials from the region met Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez and the Aklan Rivers Development Council for consultation with the local government units on the proposed dredging of Aklan River.
According to Mayor, they agreed to revise the program of works for the dredging of river downstream and hasten the flow of waters. As of this month, the Aklan River project is 92 percent completed.
The project has a total budget of P100 million released by the national government through the President Social Fund after the province of Aklan was devastated by Typhoon Frank on June 2008.
