KALIBO, Aklan – This is definitely good news for patients who need blood in cases of accidents or emergencies.
The provincial government is determined to establish complete blood banking facilities at Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital, a government owned and operated hospital under the Economic Enterprise Development Department.
Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez seeks to put up a hospital-based blood bank by year 2011 to meet the blood needs of patients and to ensure safe and adequate blood supply in the province.
“We still do not have enough blood for our patients. For now, DRSTMH has limited blood storage, but, once the Department of Health granted the license to operate a provincial blood bank, we could grant enough blood units to our constituents,“ said Marquez in his Governor’s Report to the People on Friday morning.
Amid cases of mosquito-borne disease during the rainy season, Red Cross Aklan has encouraged volunteer donors to regularly donate blood as part of its dengue prevention drive.
Marquez said the blood bank is one of the priorities of Provincial Investment Plan for Health (PIPH).
In an effort to reduce mortality rate in Aklan, the provincial hospital is also the designated Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and New born Care (CEmONC) and the district hospitals as basic emergency obstetrics care (BEMOC) facilities.
Meanwhile, Dr. Albert Marin, pathologist of DRSTMH, disclosed that blood service facilities under DoH Administrative Order No. 2008-0008 are categorized into four: blood station, blood bank, blood collecting unit and blood center.
“Only Red Cross Aklan is considered and accredited by DoH as blood station which can collect and release blood but can no longer process blood components,” Marin stressed.
Red Cross Aklan targets one percent of Aklan’s population or 5,000 units of blood from donor recruits every year. Through the initiative of Governor Marquez, the Aklan Blood Coordinating Council (ABCC) was reactivated purposely to coordinate with local government units and the barangays on its blood-letting programs.
