Miraflores named House Committee on Tourism chairman
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan - Congressman Florencio T. Miraflores (Liberal Party) was named chairman of the House of Representatives committee on tourism.
The tourism committee is one of the 59 standing committees filled up last Monday as the 15th Congress prepares for its legislative works.
Miraflores has been the senior member of the House tourism committee for the last three years and has been a member of the House of Representatives Elections Tribunal (HRET).
The three-termer solon, who ran unopposed in the May 10, 2010 elections, was earlier named in the plenary as member of the committee on accounts. The committee chairmanship of Miraflores on tourism is vital to the promotion and development of tourism industry of Aklan and the island of Boracay.
In radio interviews, Miraflores said the chair of a House committee has at least a say in the budget allocations that could enhance the development of the province. He mentioned former Cong. Edgar Chato brought more projects in his province of Bohol when he was the chairman of the House committee on tourism.
As this developed, President Benigno Simeon Aquino III allies in Congress cornered most of the major committees, even in the Senate.
Being the chair of tourism committee in the 15th Congress, Miraflores will partner with Senator Manuel 'Lito' Lapid as he was also named as head of the Senate committee on tourism.

Good for the Congressman. Now let's see what he can deliver for Aklan. And meant to deliver, not to pocket. It's too bad he has to partner with that guy in Senate. Is that guy even qualified for the job? I don't even think he can spell Tourism Committee Chairman.

What about his plunder cases in the Ombudsman? Wasn't he known as the 30% Cash Advance Tongressman before when he was with the party of the infamous Pres. Arroyo? The picking must be really slim in the hallowed halls of Congress and the Senate, for a Congressional chairman who has pending cases and a 30% Cash Advance reputation and vice a Senate chairman who can't even speak conversational English. What happened PNoy?????

Not much to choose from. You can't really blame PNoy. Politicians will go where the waves go, to catch bigger fish. Politicians in the Philippines are not afraid of losing face, greed is king. Good citizens who pays their rightful taxes are the losers. People who didn't pay enough taxes are prosecuted to fullest extent of the laws, for a few thousand pesos that got audited. Yet, politicians who stole money, money that they did not work to earn, do not go to jail and instead gets to run for government office again. Hopefully, he will not pocket 30% of Tourism Budget, and truly serve Aklan as he is suppose to.

    Another hopeful (for change) Akeanon
