Local farmers urge to avail of subsidized hybrid palay seeds
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan – The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) has encouraged the local farmers in the province to avail of subsidized hybrid rice seeds.
The provincial government through the leadership of Governor Carlito Marquez is subsidizing 50 percent of farmers’ equity of the cost of the hybrid seeds. At the current price of P3,200 for a 50-kilogram bag of hybrid rice seeds, local farmers will shoulder only P1,600 to avail of hybrid palay seeds.
OPA Aklan said the province has 17,120 hectares of rice fields, of which 6,712 hectares are irrigated and rain fed areas of 10,408 hectares. Around 40 percent, so far, of the irrigated lands and 20 percent of the rain fed areas are planted on the onset of the cropping season this year.
The provincial agriculture office stressed that there are 454 hectares with a total harvest of 130 bags per hectare and 5,262.46 hectares of irrigated rice fields with an average harvest of 3.9 tons or 92 bags per hectare in the hybrid rice production program of the province.
Farmers also planted 2,096 hectares in rain fed areas and produced an average of 3.2 tons per hectare or 80 bags per hectare.
Other ongoing programs of OPA include the hybrid rice commercialization program supported by Governor Carlito Marquez with 300 hectares planted with hybrid seeds, of which 270 hectares are hybrid rice techno-demo or clustered areas where the seeds are allocated for provinces by the Department of Agriculture (DA) in the region.
Kalibo, Tangalan, Lezo, and New Washington, all irrigated areas in the province, are among the municipalities that availed of the DA seeds for farmers. OPA said the farmers could also avail of the certified seeds 50-50 scheme of the Department of Agriculture and technical assistance on how to plant hybrid palay seeds.
