KALIBO, Aklan – Local farmers here continue to use hybrid or inbred seeds to produce more yields and to sustain the increase in local rice production.
Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez recently assisted in the distribution of 8,000 bags of inbred certified seeds (CS) under the 50-50 seed financing scheme, including hybrid techno demo and commercialization seeds for 319 hectares of rice fields.
“The local farmers availed of this program and they pay only P600 for the certified seeds out of P1,200 cost per bag, half of it is being subsidized by the agriculture department” he said over DyRU Super Radyo Kalibo.
Agriculture officials cited hybrid rice technology as one of the most proven farming technologies in raising farmers’ yields. In Western Visayas, the certified seeds are produced by 470 accredited seed growers who had undergone trainings on seedbed preparation, cultural management practices and pest management.
The national government has been pushing the use of high-yielding rice varieties to enable the local farmers to harvest higher yields without increasing their cultivation area.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), the governor said, has confirmed that the rice stocks of households in the province would last until September.
“The good news is our local farmers will start their harvests on the months of September and October. There would be no shortage of rice in the province since an additional 20,000 bags are supplied by the National Food Authority while rice stocks from Antique, Iloilo, Mindoro and Capiz provinces through the roll-on roll-off vessels augmented the rice stocks in the province,” Marquez said.
The governor stressed that root crops such as ginger, kamote, gabi and balingka were affected by the El NiƱo phenomenon compared to the increased harvests of fruits and vegetables from April to June.
In a related development, the Provincial Veterinarian Office also distributed 1,200 caber chickens from Middle East to upgrade the production of native chicken in the towns of Banga, Makato, Libacao, Numancia, Malinao and Kalibo.
To date, some 2,600 vials of anti-rabies vaccine for the towns of Altavas, Banga, Ibajay, Kalibo, Nabas, Numancia, New Washington and Tangalan were distributed by PVO intended for vaccination of 26,000 dogs.
