LIBACAO, Aklan – With high hopes to contribute to the progress of Libacao, the national government through the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has allocated P55-million rehabilitation fund for the improvement and repair of the town’s river wall project.
Libacao mayor Charito Navarosa said the P55-million is solely budgeted for the town of Libacao as part of the initial P600-million fund allocation for Panay Island, that includes repair of the Valderama road in Antique province for P50 million and P495-million for the repair of bridges and roads in Dumangas, Leon, Guimbal and Maasin, all in Iloilo province.
Navarosa, now in his third term as municipal mayor, said that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office will soon notify him of the start of construction work of the multi-million project, which could expand the existing P1.280 lineal meter Libacao river wall project structure to 500 meters from Barangay Poblacion to Barangay Janlud.
“The fund is intended to rehabilitate damaged infrastructures in Libacao and to expand the river revetment wall project. This could further protect Barangay Poblacion and its adjacent barangays from floodwaters of Aklan River during heavy rains,” Navarosa added.
Last year, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo inaugurated the P40-million Libacao River Revetment Wall Resting on Cut-off Wall Project, funded by World Bank and Local Government Finance and Development (Logofind).
The town, about 29 kilometers southwest of the capital town of Kalibo, is identified as flood-prone sites in Western Visayas. Two years ago, on June 21, 2008, Typhoon Frank triggered landslides and mud waters brought by heavy downpours.
At least 53 residents were killed and P2-billion worth of infrastructures and agricultural crops were damaged by the super typhoon in Aklan, especially in low-lying areas of Numancia, Banga, Malinao, Kalibo, Madalag, Lezo and Libacao.
Meanwhile, Navarosa is optimistic that president-elect Benigno Simeon ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III will be able sustain the delivery of social and infrastructure programs for his constituents in Libacao.
This town is a recipient of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), benefiting thousands of Libacaonons of the poverty alleviation program of President Arroyo.
