KALIBO, Aklan – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has started to distribute the printed ballots in the 17 municipalities in the province of Aklan.
Comelec officer Lorena Tumbagahan said the printed official ballots and other election paraphernalia were directly distributed to the municipal treasurer’s office for the first 13 towns.
“The official ballots for the four municipalities of Tangalan, Makato, New Washington and the capital town of Kalibo, however, will be delivered within the week in time for the first automated elections,” she said.
Tumbagahan said the Precinct Count Optical Scanner (PCOS) machines stored in a warehouse in Roxas City will be deployed to clustered precincts across the 327 barangays of the province for the final testing and sealing on May 7.
Aklan has a total of 316,886 registered voters for the May 10, 2010 national and local elections.
“The testing and sealing of PCOS is done simultaneously nationwide in the presence of the board of election inspectors and watchers of political parties and candidates, “she stressed.
Comelec Aklan, she added, is ready for the May 10, 2010 election as the Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) officials assured them during the coordinating conference with the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) of enough supply of power in the schools used as polling precincts.
Tumbagan said the 656 PCOS units for Aklan would be able to operate in barangays without power supply since the machines are equipped with a 16-hour battery.
Meanwhile, Comelec also started to distribute sample ballots to all 50 million registered voters nationwide to educate and train them on how to shade the ballots, a replica of the official ballots for the May 10 polls.
The sample ballots will also served as a guide for voters when they are voting inside the polling precincts, the Comelec said.
