KALIBO, Aklan – The National Statistics Office (NSO)-Aklan projected the population in the province to be 522,179 as of May this year.
The figure is based on the projected population for the 2010 Census of Population and Housing held from May 17 to June 17, 2010, an increase of some 25,000 Aklanons compared to the last official census in 2007.
Statistician II Rodelyn Panadero said the NSO-Aklan has tapped 507 field workers mobilized to conduct the house to house census, including 19 census area supervisors, 81 team supervisors and 382 enumerators.
“NSO is fielding teachers from the Department of Education and hired personnel for the population census project throughout the province,” she said.
Aklan is politically subdivided into 17 municipalities with a lone congressional district. The province had a total population of 495,122 in 2007, representing an increase of 9.70 percent compared to the total population of Aklan as of May 1, 2000 of 451,314.
NSO data on the 2007 census showed that the capital town of Kalibo has a population of 69,700 followed by Ibajay with 42,742 inhabitants, New Washington (39,656), Banga (34,276) and Malay (32,110). Lezo has the lowest population among the municipalities with only 13,077 persons residing in the area.
If Aklan hits the 500,000 population mark this year and the requirement of 250,000 for a legislative district is to be followed, this first-class province should have a second district.
The first district would include the towns of Libacao, Madalag, Altavas, Balete, Batan, Banga, New Washington and Kalibo. The second district would cover Malay, Ibajay, Numancia, Lezo, Malinao, Tangalan, Buruanga, Makato and Nabas.
The redistricting of Aklan will bring in an additional P70-million from the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) annually. The creation of a second congressional district is seen also to further enhance the tourism and agriculture growth and more development projects.
