Aklan chess players in contention for National age group slots

KALIBO, Aklan – Two Aklanon woodpushers remained in the striking distance in the 2010 National Age Group Championships in Matina, Davao City.
In the girls under 14 category, top seed Mira Mirano (1790) of Banga, Aklan scored three consecutive victories against 11th seed Erlz Joe Gimony of Davao, sixth-seed Ynna Sophie Canape (1411) of Manila City and ninth-seed Angel Davao in the first three rounds.
In the fourth round yesterday, Dhona Yngayo (1648) of Davao City, however, upset Mirano to extend her winning streak to four games and take the solo lead with four points. Star Jen Candia downed Canape in the fourth round to move up to second place with 3.5 points.
Mirano, Michelle Yaon of Calamba, Laguna and Janelle Mae Frayna of Bicol (1737) shared for third to fifth places with three points.
Mirano battles Frayna in today’s crucial fifth round of the five-day chess tourney held from May 15 to 19 at NCCC Mall Activity Center organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
Top three winners in the boys’ and girls’ division - under 20, under 16, under 12, under 10 and under 8 will represent the country in the the Asean age group tourney in Subic in June.
In the girls under 12, Abby Bianca Garingalao of Caano, Kalibo, Aklan scored two points with one win and two draws after four rounds of competition.
Garingalao drew her matches with Allysa Danielle Guevarra and Babylyn Salanga in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. Samantha Glo Revita of Pangasinan humbled Garingalao in the opening round while the Aklanon chess player trounced Ivy Grace Natavio of Davao in the second round.
Garingalao shared for ninth to 15th places with two points as she faces Marianell Basunillo of Davao del Sur in the fifth round today.
In the girls under 10, 11th-seed Naomi Gwyn Ramos of New Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan got off to a hot start in the opening round with a victory against fourth-seed Wyeth Pink Candia, but was shut-out in the next three rounds by sixth-seed Jesca Docena of Pasay City, seventh-seed Bhea Buen Ecal and third-seed Rhobie Shayne Benogsodan of Davao City.
Top seed Alexis Anne Osena of Batangas City (1638) overwhelmed Vic Glysen Derotas of Cebu to grab the solo lead with four points. Docena also outclassed Lorraine Yngayo in the fourth round to forge a four-way tie for second place with Ecal, Derotas and Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem of Iloilo with three points.
In the fifth round match, Ramos is getting a bye which earns her an automatic full point in the girls under 10 category.
Meanwhile, Susan Grace Neri and Kevin Mirano will also participate in the National Juniors Championships on May 20 to 24 in Davao City to vie for the right to represent the Philippines in the Asean Juniors in India.
Provincial Sports Coordinator and National Master Wilfredo Neri said the province of Aklan through the support of Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez fielded five chess players in both the national age group and juniors chess tilt in Davao.
