P11-M Ibajay communal irrigation system to benefit farmers

KALIBO, Aklan - The newly-inaugurated San Jose Community Irrigation System is expected to benefit at least 250 farmers in the town of Ibajay, according to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA).
The P11-million communal irrigation system (CIS) is a priority project of the national government to address the agricultural development program in the communities. The project was turned over by NIA to the local government of Ibajay in a simple program held in Barangay Naile, Ibajay, Aklan.
The construction and rehabilitation of NIA communal irrigation systems has a total service area of 220 hectares in the barangays of Rizal, Naile, San Jose and Naligusan. With the completion of the irrigation project, the CIS will enhance massive rice production in the hinterlands to ensure higher income for farmers.
The project was endorsed by the Regional Development Council (RDC) for the proposed Irrigation System Operation Efficiency Improvement Project (ISOEIP) to NIA last year. Aklan Re. Florencio Miraflores also supported the infrastructure support irrigation project to spur the agriculture productivity level and to provide sufficient water in the irrigated ricelands.
Last year, NIA allocated P31.4-million for irrigation projects in Aklan for the Panukuyan-San Jose augmentation, Aklan-Panakuyan irrigation system and Panakuyan-San Jose Integrated project in Ibajay and the Aklan River Irrigation System. By 2010, the ISOEIP funded by the Asian Development Bank with initial funding of P500-million will be implemented in the province.
Meanwhile, NIA is also monitoring 350 hectares covered by the communal irrigation system vulnerable to El Nino phenomenon in the province of Aklan. The government's weather bureau has reported a hotter and longer summer months and could directly affect the farmers in Luzon and Visayas.
