KALIBO, Aklan - The Men Opposed to Violence Against Women Everywhere (Move), Inc. here is observing the International Women’s Day and the Women’s Month.
Move-Aklan Pres. Franklin Quimpo said the women’s month is an opportune time to pay tribute to all females in the province who continue to struggle for their rights and empowerment.
In 2008, the Aklan Police Provincial Office’s Women and Children Protection Section reported 377 crimes against women, 150 against children and 98 crimes committed by youth offenders, Quimpo said.
Of the 377 cases against women, 313 were violations of Republic Act No. 9262, 12 were rape, seven acts of lasciviousness, two cases each of seduction and sexual harassment, and 15 physical injuries and mauling.
Thirteen cases of rape and three cases of attempted rape against children were also recorded last year, he added.
A total of 48 court cases for crimes against women and 37 against children were filed in court in 2008.
“These alarming reports show that everyone should continue to speak out and oppose violence against women and children,” Quimpo said.
He said Move-Aklan will be in the forefront to raise awareness and call the attention of men, who are primarily the perpetrators, to oppose and stop violence against women and children in the province.
For the first two months of this year, 57 violence against women cases were reported and 17 for children.
Quimpo said Move-Aklan will join all stakeholders in the Women’s Day celebration on March 11, bannered by this year’s theme:" Babae, Yaman ka ng Bayan," which emphasized Move-Aklan envisions of encouraging, empowering, inspiring and supporting men in valuing women as equals thus, eliminating gender based violence against women and children.
On March 12, the provincial government of Aklan through the Aklan Gender and Development Commission (AGADCC) will facilitate men’s health concerns through a free check up for selected males who have prostate problems on at the Daeangpan it mga Kababayenan.
