Police eye 'inside job' on Aklan NSO robbery
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL / Panay News

KALIBO, Aklan - Police investigators are eyeing the inside job angle in the recent robbery of the local National Statistics Office (NSO) here.
NSO provincial officer Blas Solidum said the cash vault was forcibly opened by the suspects and fled P92,950 in collections of the office during the weekend.
Senior Insp. Arnolito Laguerta, Kalibo police chief, said the possibility of an inside job has not been discounted by the investigators. He said all are suspects, including the 19 NSO employees, as they were unable to find any proofs of forced entry during the investigation.
Solidum admitted the lack of security guards and loopholes in the handling of cash by his office. He said the collections should be daily deposited to a local depository bank.
"There are loopholes in the security of our office. The precautionary measures by NSO are now taken to prevent similar robberies. How did the robbers learned about the money safekept for more than two days in the cash vault is really unfortunate," he stressed.
NSO has transferred to its new location after their F. Quimpo Street old office was severely damaged by typhoon 'Frank' on June 21, 2008. The NSO recently reopened its Census Serbilis Center on the first week of February for clients applying for copies of birth, marriage, death records and certificates of no marriage.
Police said the robbery could have happened between Friday evening and Sunday evening before the NSO, along N. Roldan Street , this town, was to be opened for business.
Solidum said the NSO janitor discovered the robbery incident on Monday morning. The padlocks of the main doors were destroyed and the cash vault was ransacked by suspected burglars, he said.
Superintendent Georby Manuel, chief of Aklan's Scene of Crime Operations (SOCO), said the suspects left visible footprints inside the office.
