KALIBO, Aklan – Cong. Florencio Miraflores is optimistic of the ongoing developments at the Kalibo International Airport.
The detailed survey for the airport’s expansion conducted by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is almost finished and ready for implementation this year, he said.
Miraflores urged landowners and farmers to sell their properties to the airport authorities for the construction of the runway’s extension and the two-kilometer Kalibo-New Washington diversion road.
“The project may start on April 2009 after the national government has finished the expropriation proceedings and has taken possession of the lands in Barangay Pook for airport expansion,” he said during the Kapihan sa Latte sponsored by Kalibo Cable Television Network and IBC DyRG Budyong ng Kalibo.
The Kalibo International Airport, the complementary airport of the overcrowded Caticlan airport in Malay, Aklan, is currently serving Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and Mandarin Airlines from Taiwan.
Developing the airport in Aklan is one of the priority infrastructure projects of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. It aims to decongest the anticipated passenger traffic in the region, and attract more investments to Boracay Island.
“The airport expansion will bring more jobs and business opportunities to Aklanons because it will result in increased tourist arrivals,” the solon explained.
Miraflores said the old airport terminal building will be renovated this year to handle the rising volume of foreign travelers and accommodate bigger commercial airplanes.
"Airport officials said the terminal will be operational once the additional works and facilities are in place," he added.
The enlargement of the arrival and departure area, modernization of the navigational equipment, and extension of the runway will all comply with international airport standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
