Aklan media, police to undergo voluntary drug testing
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL / Panay News

KALIBO, Aklan - Several media personalities in Aklan will subject themselves to a voluntary drug test, an initiative lauded by the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO).
Senior Superintendent Clarence Guinto said the drug testing of Aklan tri-media, especially the members of the Aklan Police and Defense Press Corps (APDPC), is a boost to the government's campaign against illegal drugs.
"The APPO police officers and personnel will also undergo voluntary drug testing to set as role models for Aklanons. This is a good signal to the community that the police and the media are against the use of illegal drugs," he said during the regular Talakayan Sa Isyung Pulis at Camp Pastor Martelino.
Guinto said the Department of Health (DoH) will undertake the procedures for voluntary drug testing of Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel and the media personalities in Aklan.
MalacaƱang has ordered the random drug testing on students and faculty members of colleges and universities as part of the government’s renewed campaign against illegal drugs.
The drug test is conducted to determine the presence of dangerous drugs - methamphetamine (shabu) and marijuana.
Guinto explained that drug-testing should begin with those who implement laws since they will be involved in apprehending drug-users.
Although Aklan is not identified by the national government to undergo the compulsory drug testing, he said law enforcers have agreed to submit themselves to the drug test.
“If there are policemen found hooked on drugs, we will take necessary actions to cleanse our ranks," Guinto stressed.
Meanwhile, Guinto ordered the creation of a task group to look into the propriety of the drug raid operations in Barangay OId Buswang last week involving a suspected drug pusher and 36 others.
"The independent investigation is not necessarily to find fault. At this point, I don't see any violations of procedures of the drug raid. I am really commending the raiding team for their accomplishments," he said, noting also, the absence of DoH-accredited crime laboratory in Aklan to examine the urine samples of the suspects.
