FAMILIES will come together today in most ancestral homes as children of various race, color, and creed celebrate motherhood in the global observance of Mother’s Day.
Tokens of endearment, chocolates, and flowers from children will flow today into the hands of mothers who rocked their cradles in infancy and continued to shape their lives well into their adult years amid the twists and turns of life.
While honoring mothers is part of every culture, the modern-day observance of Mother’s Day could be traced to a movement that began in 1872 to heal the scars of the American Civil War.
While honoring mothers began in Greece, the crusade crossed to North America sometime in 1872 started by the framers of the Mother’s Day movement to heal the scars of the Civil War.
Honoring mothers first began as a personal mission of a young American girl, Julia Ward Howe, to show reverence and admiration for the natural maternal patience among mothers.
Howe is not only remembered by Americans as among the prime movers for "Mother’s Day" but also for writing the lyrics for the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
But while Howe started the "Mother’s Day" campaign, it was another American girl from Philadelphia, Anna Jarvis, who brought the struggle to its successful finale almost a quarter of a century after Howe took the initiative to set aside a special day to honor mothers.
Jarvis began the campaign in her own home state of Philadelphia in 1905, the year her mother died. From Philadelphia, she went from state to state across the East Coast. In 1908, West Virginia became the first state to observe one Sunday of the month of May to celebrate Mother’s Day.
Nearly every American state followed, setting one Sunday during the spring season as Mother’s Day. In 1914, United States President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day across America.

The nation joins today more than 46 countries across the globe in the annual celebration of Mother’s Day, which is observed with joy, love, and devotion by children of all ages.
A perfect day to celebrate the joys of having a mother, special prayer services will be held in many churches in honor of mothers, and as an expression of gratitude for the hardships and sacrifices they bear in bringing up their children.
Mother’s Day is a time for breakfast in bed for moms who will be showered with gifts, flowers, and cards. Families will spend the day at the mall to watch a movie, shop for mom, and dine at mother’s favorite restaurant.
Children who cannot visit their mothers on this important day will instead send greeting cards, a text message, or make a phone call to express their love and thanksgiving.
In the Bible, there are many passages reminding the faithful to honor their mothers. In Proverb 10:1, The Proverbs of Solomon said, "A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother."
The observance of Mother’s Day was a brainchild of Anna Jarvis, recognized as the founder of Mother’s Day, who started the crusade to find a memorial day for women.
The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908 in the church where her mother, Ann Jarvis, taught Sunday school. The site is now recognized as the International Mother’s Day shrine. In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday of May every year as Mother’s Day.
