KALIBO, Aklan – The Asian Spirit flight service on Incheon Korea-Kalibo route will push through on Monday, May 7, according to Aklan Rep. Florencio Miraflores.
Asian Spirit, the leading budget air carriers of the Philippines, would start flying linking the capital town of Aklan to Incheon to attract both local and foreign travellers to the popular tourist destination of Boracay Island.
“After months of waiting, the flight from Korea to Kalibo starts this week to open Aklan as a major hub of international flights in Visayas,” he told Panay News.
Kalibo domestic airport, the gateway to Boracay Island, is undergoing expansion of its arrival area to service other national carriers, Miraflores added.
Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez also welcomed the international flights to boost the international presence of Aklan in serving provincial cities of South Korea, including Incheon.
“The provincial government released funds to build up the arrival area of Kalibo airport to accommodate passengers from Korea,” he stressed.
Records from the Department of Tourism (DoT) show that the number of foreign and domestic tourists in Boracay climbed to 556,084 in 2006 from 499,457 in 2005. Foreign tourists, representing a third of the total, increased 18 percent to 183,835 from 155,744. Korean tourists, representing representing two-thirds of total international visitors in the island, numbered 124,618 last year.
In 1996, Asian Spirit started its regular air services to Caticlan airport utilizing it's 47-seater De Havilland Dash of Canada and it drastically expanded to other tourist-potential destinations or missionary routes in the country.
The airline operates a fleet of 14 consisting of 40-seater CN235's, 50-seater Da Havilland Dash7's of Canada, 60-seater YS-11s, 70-seater British Aerospace Advance Turbo Prop (ATP), and the latest member of its fleet the 83-seater British Aerospace 146 Jet from the British Aerospace System of UK.
In its maiden international flight to Kalibo, Asian Spirit has recruited cabin crew and airport logistic staff members coupled with the procurement of air fleet comprising of MD82 and MD 83 on Incheon-Kalibo for its two and three times flights a week.
Miraflores said the provincial government is coordinating with the local and national government agencies, particularly the DoT and the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) and the local tourism officers to ensure the success of the first international flight.
“This opportunity for the province is our lasting legacy to the Aklanons with the united leadership of local officials and the people,” he added.
