BATAN, Aklan – Three mayoral bets here signed a peace covenant and declared “all-out support” to it to ensure orderly and honest mid-term polls.
Delfina Ramos (Kampi), wife of three-termer “graduating” Mayor Herodutos Ramos, incumbent Vice Mayor Dr. Dante Reyes (UNO-PDP Laban) and Romeo Abella (Nacionalista Party) signed the peace pact.
Among the witnesses to the signing held at the Batan Sports Complex were Rev.Fr. Randy Artuz and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) Aklan Chapter Chairman Augusto Tolentino.
“For the success of the May 14 elections, there is a more urgent need for the full support and cooperation of political aspirants,” Artuz said.
The town of Batan, home of the famous Kalantiaw Shrine, has 17,649 registered voters. On April 26, government employee Aloysius Perlas sought the intervention of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to disqualify mayoral candidate Delfina Ramos, citing Section 39 of Republic Act No. 7160 that a resident should have at least one year residency in the place the bet is seeking office immediately preceding the day of the election.
Perlas, in his three-page petition, said the 60-year-old Ramos, a native of Cebu City failed to establish the one-year residency requirement in Brgy. Palay. Ramos, however, declared she is a registered voter of Precinct No. 63-B.
Mayor Ramos believed that the camp of archrival incumbent Vice Mayor Reyes is behind the petition for disqualification complaint against his wife.
Also witnesses in the covenant signing were members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Aklan United Media Association, the Comelec and the Aklan Police and Defense Press Corps.
Also present during the peace pact signing was former mayor Jayner Demeterio (Lakas-CMD), who is running for vice mayor. Incumbent councilor Julio Leonor Jr (UNO-Nacionalista Party) and Mariano Pador Jr (UNO) failed to attend the covenant signing.
