"I HELPED HIM." Aklan governor Carlito Marquez is facing his unlikely opponent, 'mediaman' Jimmy Bañares, in a 'word war' of stinging allegations (ACMagno)

KALIBO, Aklan – A “word war” erupted between the governor of Aklan and a local weekly paper publisher, forcing the latter to file a complaint before the Kalibo Philippine National Police (PNP) last Friday.
Jimmy Bañares, publisher of the People’s Chronicle said he arrived around 2 p.m. Thursday at the Gov. Roberto Q. Garcia building, formerly the Governor’s Guest House, to follow up a solicitation with Gov. Carlito Marquez.
Thirty minutes later, Bañares said he met the governor at his office.
Bañares said he was threatened and tagged by the governor as his likely assassin. But, Gov. Marquez denied Bañares’ allegation. He also denied that Bañares was “detained.”
Marquez told reporters at the Aklan Sampaguita Gardens in New Washington, Aklan last Friday that suspicious looking individuals riding on a motorcycle without plate number were asking his security guard assigned in the main gate of his house about his whereabouts.
But when the security guard tried to open the main gate, they fled towards the town of Kalibo, Marquez said.
Regarding Bañares, he said: “In fact, I helped him in his weekly newspaper out of mercy."
Marquez is staying at Brgy. Libas, Banga, Aklan with his family.
Last month, the house of Vice Gov. Ronquillo Tolentino was shot by an unidentified suspect.
Last January 13, 2007, a box was also found near the perimeter fence of the provincial hospital compound, allegedly intended for Marquez. It did not contain a bomb as earlier suspected.
Last Thursday, Marquez confronted Bañares why he was trailing him and allegedly getting information in the town of Balete. He was also taking pictures of Marquez’ residence using his cell phone, the governor said.
It was learned Marquez also informed Kalibo PNP Chief Insp. Arnold Ardiente, Land Transportation Office (LTO) Aklan officer-in-charge Valtimor Conanan and Chief Insp. Aden Lagradante of the Aklan Provincial Police Office (APPO) during the confrontation.
Incidentally, Marquez said DyKR station manager Jerome Vega and Kalibo Cable TV production head Gary Vargas were also present.
When Bañares was brought to Kalibo PNP station, Ardiente said, the publisher had an expired driver’s license since 2004, no plate and without motor registration.
Over DyKR Kalibo last Friday, Bañares admitted he had no pertinent documents on the impounded motorcycle. A reliable source also revealed that the motorcycle is owned by Western Visayas News Journal publisher based in Antique.
Marquez also acknowledged his P3,000 debt to Bañares in his weekly paper out of his personal pocket to lend a hand to the publisher.
“It is unfortunate that this syndicated crime happened after the peace covenant signing. This is below the belt allegations by certain individuals,” he added.
The peace accord signing was sponsored by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Commission on Elections, Diocese of Kalibo and the Philippine National Police last Wednesday morning.
