Garcia spills the beans on Miraflores
BY NOEL CABOBOS

I'M IN TO WIN. Gubernatorial bet Mabeth Garcia visibly in a fighting mood in a recent press conference in the town of Ibajay (BRZabal)

KALIBO, Aklan—In a desperate move to save the family from breaking apart, reelectionist Cong. Florencio Miraflores has offered a deal to his nephew Ibajay Mayor Jun Garcia, husband of gubernatorial bet Mabeth Garcia, which confirms that his alliance with reelectionist Gov. Carlito Marquez with Tibyog coalition is an alliance for money.
“I-goodtime na lang natin ang pera ni Lito,” Garcia told the media quoting Miraflores whom he claimed called him over the phone to convince his wife Mabeth Garcia to just withdraw from the gubernatorial candidacy.
Miraflores was not immediately available for comment.Garcia said he was indignant of the proposal and told Miraflores that Mabeth will never back out from the race even if Miraflores’ wife Lulu who is running against him withdraws her mayoral candidacy.
“We loved him and we supported him all the way since he started in politics but this time it is different. The people want Mabeth to run for governor and nobody can stop her from doing so,” Garcia emphasized.
Sources said Miraflores was forced to offer the said deal to Garcia because he was being financially gripped by Marquez who is calling the shots in the financial allocation of Tibyog candidates.
Marquez, sources added, was terribly disgruntled by Mabeth’s running for the gubernatorial post against him so he has not yet released any amount allocated to Miraflores.
Sources said Tibyog has allocated at least P70 million to run the Tibyog campaign against the United Opposition here.
Earlier, during the Tibyog press conference, Marquez said that he was satisfied with Miraflores when the latter asked her wife to run against Mayor Garcia for the mayoral seat of Ibajay but sources said he was actually very mad that’s why he gave Miraflores a deal to tell Mabeth to just withdraw her candidacy.
Mabeth, on the other hand, called the offer political blackmail.
“I don’t need politics to live a good life. I am enjoying a good life. The problem here is Lito Marquez. That is the clamor of the many—the business sector, the barangay and the people. The problem is his administration that is why I am running to offer the Aklanons an alternative, a homegrown leader who will always be here no matter what. A leader who will move Aklan forward. An Aklan that every Aklanon deserves,” she said.
“There’s no looking back. I’m moving on. I’m in and I’m in to win,” she said.

  1. Hello,

Can you please inform Ms. Garcia to list down in black and white what are the problems of this administration, hwo she is going to solve it and how do we know she has solved it. Para klaro.

Instead of just saying Aklanons need an alternative, she should say why we need an alternative and present here reasons. I am sure as a former bank branch manager, she knows that when approving a loan she is to support her decision with facts and figures.

Aklanons will love her more if she can support her arguments with facts and figures.

    Dear Elmar,

I am writing to respond to your comment regarding specific problems of the current administration that appeared in the Aklan Forum.

I am Dr. Jay Mobo, a physician and assistant professor at Yale University in Connecticut. My background includes a master's degree in public health also
    from Yale.

I am a graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. I am also a younger
    brother of Mabeth Mobo-Garcia.

First of all, I truly appreciate your taking some time to write your comment. Discussions of concerns such as yours are important in starting a conversation that will hopefully to something positive.

The short answer to your inquiry is: There was a survey conducted in late January 2007 of over
160,000 Aklanons from all demographics. Majority of the
responders are either dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied with a wide-ranging issues that they
feel the current government is failing to address.

These include: Unemployment, lack of affordable quality education, limited affordable quality health
services, inefficient government service, shortage of rural
electrification, deteriorating roads and other infrastructure, falling agricultural production,
inefficient tax collection system, lack of comprehensive youth and family support programs, and
    inhospitable business environment.

The solutions to these issues are complex and will have to be multi-factorial. But it should involve
earnest discussions and people with expertise. And it should start with a leader who truly understands Aklan's daily economic realities, and believes that
    change has to take place.

I can tell you Mabeth is such a person. One of her strengths is being able to bring diverse talents to the table to iron out differences in opinions and come up with consensus decision.

As an example, Ms. Nelia Sancho, who is internationally and nationally renowned human rights
advocate of impeccable repute, decided to stay with Mabeth after the breakaway group because Nelia
    believes in Mabeth's earnestness.

Rural electrification is being politicized for personal gains. Mabeth has won the trust and
confidence of national experts in keeping our rural electrification within reach of the masses, and away from prying eyes of politicians. She is interested
in finding ways to keep our energy supply adequate.

In terms of health in the province, I went home in February last month after 10 years in the states.

And I am both amazed and appalled by the healthcare system
in Aklan. I am amazed how beautiful the provincial
hospital looks form the outside. But I am extremely disappointed to learn that there was no comprehensive planning to staff the hospital and having diagnostic
    imaging studies.

In terms of common causes of
mortalities and morbidities, Aklanons continue to suffer from easily preventable and treatable
infections and complications while the government charges PP300 for a butterfly needle. The childhood
vaccination rate is at dismal 70-80% and therefore children still die from preventable pneumonia and
    other infections.

    Maternal complications from
pregnancy is still significant. My pledge, then, is:I already started helping and will continue to help
Mabeth effect meaningful changes in Aklan health system should she win. This will be gratis et amore.
My service to my sister and my beloved province.

I believe I, along with other experts that only Mabeth can bring to the table, will be tremendous
    resources.

You, too, can be a part of the solution. Vote wisely this coming elections. As Mabeth always says, don't vote for politicians because they are perfect. Vote for those who share your ambitions, dreams, and ideals. Decisions are made by those who show up and vote. Do your share, and protect your vote.

Again thank you for your time. And if you can be so kind to inform your friends and families about Mabeth, I will appreciate it. If you have specific questions to me, my e-mail listed above.

    Sincerely,
    Jay Mobo, MD, MPH
