COVENANT SIGNING FOR BURUANGA BETS?
"We are on top of the situation" - Aklan PNP

UNDER CONTROL. PNP Senior Supt. Benigno Durana Jr assures the local police is on top of the situation, despite, the incidents of indiscriminate firing last week in the town of Buruanga (BRZabal)

KALIBO, Aklan – Acting Aklan police director Senior Supt Benigno Durana Jr said the Aklan Provincial Police Office (APPO) is on top of the situation to ensure the conduct of peaceful and credible elections, particularly in the town of Buruanga.
In fact, the APPO, the Aklan Police and Defense Press Corps, Aklan United Media Association and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) are initiating a peace covenant signing today, April 22, for the local candidates to commit themselves to a peaceful and honest election, Durana said.
There are six towns – New Washington, Lezo, Madalag, Libacao, Ibajay and Buruanga – considered as areas of concern, Durana added.
Expected to sign the peace agreement are mayoral bets Engr. Quezon Labindao (Kampi) and Engr. Rolando Rojo (Uno-PDP-Laban) and vice mayoral candidates incumbent Manuel Sualog and Dextero Obrique.
Durana pointed out the series of indiscriminate firing incidents in Brgys. El Progreso and Cabugan in the town of Buruanga should be stop.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has yet to declare the town as ‘election hot spot’ despite the request of local candidates, but Durana said, the Comelec is far from declaring the town as ‘hot spot”.
He stressed the Aklanons, including the media, should take part in the peaceful and orderly elections.
“We should go out and condemn violence. APPO is committed, prepared and capable to preserve an honest and credible election through the help of government agencies and media,” he added.
Durana said there would be unscheduled check points in certain areas aside from the regular check points by the local police to thwart those individuals out to sow terror in the community.
Last Tuesday evening, a composite team from the Kalibo Philippine National Police (PNP) led by SPO3 Reynaldo Macahilig, PO3 Joseph Cavan and PO1 Ulysis Salazar arrested 40-year old Arnel Tabanera, of Brgy Tamalagon, Tangalan, Aklan for violation of PD 1866 in relation to Comelec Resolution 7764.
A homemade 30 caliber without serial number and four live ammunitions were seized from him while driving a Mitsubishi L300 van at the Kalibo-Numancia bridge checkpoint.
The Comelec gun ban exemption implemented on January 14 is an effective deterrent to election-related incidents in certain areas in Aklan, Durana added.
Durana said there would no exemptions among police and military men on APPO’s intensive campaign on election gun ban and political partisan, even RPA-ABB and New People’s Army.
“We cannot also discount the possibility of their presence during elections in Aklan. RPA-ABB should respect the peace agreement like they don’t have to be utilized by local politicians. The Comelec gun ban exemption is silent on the provision allowing them to carry firearms,” Durana said.
