KALIBO, Aklan – There GOes the truth.
United Opposition (UNO) arbitration committee named the Tres Marias - Maria Bettina Mobo-Garcia, Vicky Ramos and former Aklan solon Gabrille Calizo, as official candidates of Genuine Opposition (GO) in the midterm polls, former Ambassador Ernesto Maceda pointed out.
But, political neophyte Dr. Karen Ambito-Galvan, who was endorsed by detained President Joseph Estrada, declared she is the rightful party’s official candidate for Aklan governor.
In a press conference recently, Galvan said she got the nomination from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) president Jejomar C. Binay on February 8, 2007 while former Malinao town mayor Victor Inserto was also appointed as provincial committee chairman of PDP Laban.
Galvan is reportedly supporting former Manila City treasurer Anthony Acevedo for congressman in Aklan’s lone district to challenge re-electionist Rep. Florencio Miraflores, who belongs to the Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi), founded by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
“Binay withdrew the nomination as the Tres Marias are far stronger and have strong political backing compared to the group of Galvan and Inserto,” said Maceda in a radio interview.
Maceda, chairman of the arbitration committee, added they decided to field Ramos of Aklan Independent Movement (AIM) as UNO provincial chairman and the party’s bet for governor, since incumbent Gov. Carlito Marquez, a Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, is eyeing reelection.
Calizo, a known of ally of re-electionist Senate President Manny Villar and a Kusog it Akean stalwart, is challenging veteran journalist and current Vice Gov. Ronquillo Tolentino of the dominant local coalition Tibyog it Akean.
Maceda said the Tres Marias is still firming up its slates in the provincial and municipal levels in time for the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy on those seeking elective posts before March 29.
“That is why GO sorties in Aklan, Antique and Iloilo were cancelled to allow the arbitration committee to make the final decision,” Maceda stressed.
Former senator Loren Legarda and House Minority Leader Francis “Chiz” Escudero, both of Genuine Opposition (GO) began making the rounds in Aklan prior to the final decision of the arbitration committee to ‘iron out’ the rift of opposition bets in Aklan.

What is wrong with the current administration in aklan? What can the Tres Marias offer? Mobo-Garcia compared to Miraflores, why would Aklanon choose the former? Experience? Expertise? Same with Ramos. She claims to bring the glory back to Aklan during the time of her father? What was that glory? Can she quantify that?
