Aklan grads urged to help elect good leaders
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan – Veteran newsman Juan Dayang exhorted graduating students of the Panay Technological College (PTC) to get more involved in the coming electoral process, particularly, by voting wisely and to help their parents vote as well.
During Tuesday’s commencement exercises of PTC, Dayang, president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) and chairman of the PTC board of trustees, told members of the graduating class: “Let your sense of patriotism and nationalism prevail in voting for candidates who deserve to become public servants.”
Citing their idealism and activism, he said, the youth can be the “driving force in forging unity, law and order and prosperity in the country.”
Echoing Jose Rizal’s famous words in exhorting the youth as the “hope of the fatherland,” Dayang told them: “You are the future of this country. Our country needs you. The expectations from you are high as the stakes are high, too, in preserving our democratic ideals and institutions as well as our continuing quest for economic progress, social cohesion and political stability.”
He commended the parents and the members of the faculty for seeing the graduates pass through college and become upright citizens of the country.
“Given the academic teaching in the school, I strongly feel confident that you are well equipped to meet head-on on the next higher level of your life,” he added.
A former commissioner of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), Dayang challenged the graduates to be problem solvers.
“It is now up to you to make the most out of what you have learned by applying intelligently those principles, theories and processes on problems and challenges as you plod on,” Dayang said.
Dayang also served the National Book Development Board (NBDB) as governor for seven years. He reminded the graduating class that graduation is just a beginning and not to let obstacles derail their ambitions.
“As soon as you step out of the portals of your alma mater, you will be on your own. You will face the realities outside that will be a litmus test your character, your values and your knowledge. You have to make decisions and face the consequences, either you succeed or you fail,” he stressed.
