BORACAY – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on ‘high-level alert’ to secure dignitaries of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit who wish to visit the famed resort island, Chief Supt. Geary Barias, regional director said.
Barias assured a tighter security of delegates from the 10-nations composed of Brunei, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines including the local and foreign tourists in the island.
“The communication systems of the local police in the island and the security arrangements of other police stations in mainland Aklan should be enhanced to deter terrorist attacks during the visit,” he stressed.
With the one entry one-exit in Cagban jetty port is now implemented, Barias added, the Boracay Special Tourist Protection Office (BSTPO) could enhance its security preparations for the heads of state attending the summit to be held in Cebu City on December 11 to 14, 2006.
Foreign delegates and ministers are expected to visit Boracay Island after the summit to extend their vacation, Barias claimed.
The PNP said uniformed police will be deployed to Caticlan jetty port, the main-jump off point to the island and the Cagban jetty port to beef up the security measures and to thwart possible attacks from terrorists and criminal groups.
“The security in the island is a regular activity of the police even there is no international gathering. The spillover of delegates in Boracay could benefit the tourism industry and boost the capacity of PNP to protect them while enjoying the pristine beaches,” Barias said.
