KALIBO, Aklan - Cong. Florencio Miraflores (Liberal Party, Aklan) said he favors the 2007 May local elections instead of postponing it to give way to the proposed Charter Change through constitutional assembly.
Miraflores stressed the proposal to postpone the election is unconstitutional as the local elections to be held next year is mandated by law.
"The constituent assembly proposal is being discussed in the Congress whether there is a need to postpone the elections to November from May after revising the 1987 Constitution," he clarified in radio interview by IBC DYRG Budyong ng Kalibo.
Malacanang earlier backs the 'no-election' of senators and local officials in 2007 in preparation for amending the Constitution, but, some congressmen said the election would push through as provided for under the Constitution.
Miraflores, a three-termer Aklan governor before he was elected in 2004 for Congress, said "let the Congress thresh out the provisions in the 1987 Constitution before it fasttrack the adoption of a parliamentary system and holding the elections in May 2007."
