Kalibo, Aklan - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has lauded the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc (PAPI) for its role in the promotion of responsible journalism and countryside development.
In her message for the first-ever Aklan Media Summit on October 26-29, 2006 here and in the island resort of Boracay, President Arroyo stressed she is pleased that PAPI, a premier media organization, continues its noble mission of helping promote investment opportunities in the region.
"PAPI's recent activities, in cooperation with various provincial governments in the Visayas and Mindanao, have not only promoted press freedom but have also helped invigorate the countryside economy," she pointed out.
Arroyo also added the summit's theme, " The Role of the Press in Spotlighting Investment Opportunities in Aklan," clearly "illustrates the kind of media responsibility that our country needs so that it can truly move forward."
Some 100 mediamen from the different parts of the country and speakers Metrorail Transit manager Gen. Roberto Lastimoso, Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez, Public Works secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr, Aklan solon Florencio Miraflores, National Commission on Culture and the Arts Executive Director Cecille Alvarez and Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Pinol are attending the media summit.
The Aklan Media Summit, an offshoot of the successful staging of Cotabato Media Summit last August 26-28, 2006, includes a strategic communications management seminar for public information officers, a journalism seminar on responsible reporting, ethics and libel for media practitioners and a forum on investment opportunities, plus the conferment of awards to outstanding public officials and tour of the famous island of Boracay and the Manggad it Kalibo here.
President Arroyo also encouraged the PAPI headed by Juan "Johnny" Dayang to hold more strategic partnerships and alliances with the local government units.
"It clearly shows the caliber of PAPI's leadership and the quality of the organization's membership in this crucial stage of our nation's history. This is the kind of partnership our government needs," Arroyo said.
