Boracay needs tourism enhancement, says Gabor
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

Boracay Island -– Former tourism secretary Mina Gabor is pushing for the enhancement of tourism services to attract more tourists and establish the resort island as a premier tourism hub.
"To enhance the long-term competitiveness of Boracay Island, we need to improve the service quality of the tourism industry constantly to meet the needs of our visitors and encouraged them to visit and stimulate their spending in the island," she said.
Gabor cited the tourism arrivals in 2005 as an exceptional start for the island’s tourism, which registered a record-breaking 499,452 tourists, mostly local visitors. Tourism receipts also posted P3.8-billion last year largely on huge tourist arrivals of Asian and European visitors, particularly Korean tourists.
"Boracay Island has all the infrastructure – airports in Kalibo and Caticlan, pristine white beaches, world-class resorts and hotels, fine dining, but the stakeholders should also harness their tourism services and resources for sustainable development,"”she said.
The putting up of environmental enhancement and promotion of the island by resort owners and residents is needed for long-term business and environmental viability. Boracay’s tourism industry and the provincial government should also find practical and cost-effective systems for environmental protection to achieve sustainable tourism benefits, she added.
“"It is crucial to reinforce the tourism promotion to extend their stay and travel and increase visitor’s spending while in the island. The hotels and establishments should develop and package tourism services so as to enhance the island's appeal as premier tourist destination,"” Gabor told reporters.
