A World War II vintage bomb was discovered
in Tambak, New Washington, Aklan on Easter Sunday.
Jose Arve Farnaso, 18, a restaurant service crew, told the police that he found the vintage bomb while he
was swimming in front of Beach View Resort.
The bomb is still active, said Senior
Police Officer 4 Vengie Repedro of Aklan Police Provincial Office-Explosives and
Ordnance Disposal Team (APPO-EOD).
Repedro said “he (Farnaso) accidentally
stepped into the vintage bomb while swimming on Sunday afternoon.”
The vintage bomb was found to be 60mm
and still could explode and kill people within 20 to 25 meters radius.
Repedro said the bomb was placed under
the custody of APPO-EOD team before its disposal.
The bomb could have been left by
Japanese soldiers in the area during the World War II, but, this is the first
time that a vintage bomb was found in Tambak, a coastal village off the Sibuyan
Sea.
“Mga tyempo pa it Hapon siguro dun hay
sa New Washington may garison ru mga suldado nga Hapon kato, ag duyon nga
mortar hay old model. Maski old run ag sealed, active pat-a ru explosive filler
karun,” Repedro said.
Aside from the vintage bomb, the
APPO-EOD will also dispose the hand grenade and rifle grenade recovered in
Balete, Aklan last February 2 after the APEC ministerial meetings this May.
