A
wreath laying ceremony and a mass will highlight the 103rd birth
anniversary for the man known as the ‘Father of Aklan’ on Saturday.
November
8 of every year is a special non-working holiday in the whole province of Aklan to
commemorate the birthday of Godofredo Peralta Ramos.
The
commemorative event will start with a mass at Cathedral of Saint John the
Baptist at 7:30 a.m. followed by the wreath-laying at Ramos’ monument in front
of the Aklan Provincial Capitol Building.
Local
officials and the family of Ramos will offer flowers at around 8 a.m. to honor
the distinguished public official.
Ramos
was elected governor of Aklan from 1959 to 1961, Aklanon’s representative to
Congress 3rd District of Capiz (1950-1953, 1954-1957) and
congressman of the Lone District of Aklan from 1962-1965.
From
1950 to 1953, Ramos was a member of the Commission of Appointments, the Commission
on Revision and Codification of Laws and the Committee on Government
Enterprise.
He
was a Justice of the Court of Appeals from 1971 to 1976 and a delegate to the 1971
Philippine Constitutional Convention.
As
congressman of the Lone District of Aklan from 1962-1965, Ramos chaired the Committee on
Foreign Affairs, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, Member of
the Joint Legislative Executive Tax Commission and the Committee on Economic
Affairs and the Committee on Judiciary.
Ramos
also authored the passage of Republic Act No. 1414 that separated the province
of Aklan as an independent province from Capiz. The bill was signed by then
President Ramon Magsaysay on April 25, 1956.
Ramos
was born on November 8, 1911 in Kalibo, Aklan and died on July 17, 1977.
